The novel begins with a man, Daniel Gluck, who seems to have washed up on a beach. Believing he has died he casts his eye along the beach and sees even more like him. The corpses of refugees line the beach, interspersed between lounging sunbathers and laughing children who seem to take no notice of the corpses around them. Luckily for Daniel, this scene is all a dream, as he is in a coma. Most days, in the chair beside him is a woman who the nurses believe is his granddaughter. She had no blood relation with him.
*Daniel Gluck, a 101-year-old former songwriter, lies asleep and dreaming in his care home. He is regularly visited by 32-year-old Elisabeth Demand, who had been his next door neighbour as a young child. Her mother had disapproved of their early friendship, based on her belief that Daniel was gay, but Elisabeth had nevertheless formed a close bond with him and been inspired by his descriptions of works of art. As a consequence of his influence on her, Elisabeth is now a junior arts lecturer at a London university.
A major character in the novel is the long-dead ‘60s pop artist, Pauline Boty, the subject of Elisabeth’s graduate school thesis. The story largely alternates between Daniel’s prolonged dreams as he edges closer to death, and Elisabeth’s recollections of the origins of their friendship and its repercussions. Another character Boty was a leading pop artist in 60s London, who died young and was subsequently written out of history by the male critics of the time and her family's refusal to exhibit her work. Her life and work is described in glowing detail, along with one of her inspirations, Christine Keeler.

Autumn is a post-Brexit novel of love, truth, and time by Ali Smith in which 32-year-
old Elisabeth Demand reflects on her almost lifelong romantic-spiritual love affair
with 101-year-old Daniel Gluck. As the novel gets under way, the narrator – who is
never identified but who speaks to the reader as though a close friend – denotes that
England in 2016 is England in the worst of times. The narrator takes a decidedly
negative view of Brexit – the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union
– and into the divided post-Brexit social landscape, readers meet Daniel and Elisabeth.
The novel weaves back and forth between the present and the past, from the time
Elisabeth first met Daniel at the age of eight to the current day where she is 32 and
Daniel is dying in hospice.
The tone of the book changes from the disillusion and resignation Elisabeth feels when confronted with the British cultural changes that led to the Brexit vote to a form of hope embodied by Boty and her defiant flaunting of the expectations of her suburban middle class family.
