Public Talk by S. Balachandra Rao
Synopsis: Even as in other ancient civilizations the development of astronomy in India started ever since man became curious about the stars, the sun and the moon and their related phenomena which he could see in the sky. We notice plenty of references to the heavenly bodies and their events in the ancient Vedic literature. Names of stars and references to the biggest planet Brihaspati and the brightest one, Venus (Vena), the six seasons constituting the solar year, the lunar months and eclipses are available in the Rigveda and the Yajurveda. Later, more concrete and advanced details of calendrical elements like tithi, nakshatra etc are provided in the text 'Vedanga Jyotisha' (c.1200 BCE). But, systematic growth of mathematical astronomy of planetary motions - referred to as 'siddhantic' astronomy - must have started in this country about 2 or 3 centuries before Aryabhata I (b. 476 CE).
In the talk the speaker will try to present a brief survey of the contributions of the great Indian savants in the field since the Vedic times upto the remarkable Kerala astronomers of the post-Bhaskara II period. A brief mention of our famous astronomical tables ('saarinis'/'padakams') will be in conclusion.
