🛠️ What You’ll Need
Tools
Adjustable wrench or channel-locks
Screwdrivers (flat and Phillips)
Allen (hex) wrench (common sizes: 3/32″, 1/8″)
Needle-nose pliers
Cartridge puller (optional but helpful)
Utility knife
Materials
Replacement shower cartridge (match to your model)
Plumber’s grease (silicone grease)
Towel or rag
Bucket
🧠 Step 1 — Confirm the Cause
Before replacing anything, make sure the dripping is due to a worn cartridge, not a blocked or broken shower head.
To check:
Remove the shower head and run water briefly.
If it still drips with the head off, the valve/cartridge is likely leaking.
🔍 Step 2 — Identify Your Shower Valve Type
Different faucet brands use different cartridges (Moen, Delta, Kohler, Price Pfister, etc.).
Look for:
Brand logo on the handle
Model name
Search your valve online for the exact replacement cartridge
Having the right part before you start saves time.
🚰 Step 3 — Shut Off the Water
Most homes have either:
✔ Whole-house shutoff: usually where the main line enters your home
✔ Local shutoff: valves near the shower or under a nearby sink
Turn off both hot and cold supplies.
Open a faucet to drain pressure.
🔧 Step 4 — Remove the Handle
Look for a screw:
Often behind a decorative cap or under the handle.
Pry off the cap with a flat screwdriver.
Unscrew and pull the handle straight off.
If it sticks, gently turn side to side.
🪛 Step 5 — Remove the Escutcheon Plate
The escutcheon is the decorative plate on the wall.
Unscrew the screws.
Pull the plate off.
You may need to cut caulk around the edge with a utility knife.
🚪 Step 6 — Remove Trim and Retaining Clip
You’ll now see the cartridge and possibly a retaining nut or clip.
Remove the retaining clip (straight up with needle-nose pliers).
If there’s a nut:
Turn counterclockwise with a wrench.
Protect the finish with a rag.
Tip: Keep track of small pieces—lay them out in order.
🧰 Step 7 — Remove the Old Cartridge
The cartridge is the internal cylinder that controls flow.
Try pulling it straight out.
If it’s stuck:
Use a cartridge puller tool.
Rock back and forth gently while pulling.
Note the orientation — most only fit one way.
Remove any old O-rings and debris.
🧼 Step 8 — Prepare the New Cartridge
Compare old vs new — ensure correct match.
Lightly coat new O-rings with plumber’s grease.
Make sure the splines/flat spots align.
🔩 Step 9 — Install the New Cartridge
Slide it straight in — don’t force it.
Ensure it seats fully and lines up with the valve body.
🔧 Step 10 — Reinstall Retaining Clip / Nut
Put the clip back in place.
If there’s a nut:
Tighten snugly (don’t overtighten).
🚿 Step 11 — Reassemble Trim and Handle
Replace the escutcheon plate.
Screw it down.
Reattach the handle.
👍 Step 12 — Turn the Water Back On
Slowly open hot and cold supplies.
Test the shower:
Turn on/off.
Check for leaks or drips.
If it still drips immediately, the cartridge may be wrong type or there may be debris — shut off water and double-check.
⚠️ Tips & Troubleshooting
❗ Water Still Dripping?
Check valve body for mineral buildup.
Ensure cartridge oriented correctly.
Clean inlet screen if present.
❗ Water Hard to Turn On/Off?
Might need lube on O-rings.
Cartridge might be seated slightly off.
🧼 Cleaning Tips
If you had buildup in the valve area, flush with a bit of water to clear debris before installing the new cartridge.
🛒 How to Get the Right Cartridge
Look up your shower brand/model.
Remove the old cartridge and take it to a hardware store.
Match numbers/part code online.
