Jim Kovaleski is a regenerative farmer, teacher, and innovator best known as The Nomadic Farmer — a name earned from years of traveling seasonally between New Port Richey, Florida and multiple Maine farm sites. For more than a decade, Jim followed the seasons: summers up north, winters in Florida — always growing food, refining his craft, and teaching others how to do the same.

In Florida, Jim became known for transforming small suburban yards into vibrant market gardens using heavy tree mulch, artistic bed layouts, and colorful lettuce and brassica plantings. His edible landscapes became living art pieces — visually stunning, incredibly productive, and beloved by locals who often stopped just to admire his patterned rows. He sold his harvests through farmers markets, CSA buyer clubs, and local restaurants, all while proving that profitable, small-scale farming can be both simple and beautiful.

In Maine, Jim’s system evolved into the Grass-Fed Market Garden, where he uses fresh-cut grasses as his primary planting bed material — a living mulch that feeds soil biology, retains moisture, and eliminates tilling. His method mimics natural pasture cycles, building nutrient-dense soil while reducing inputs to nearly zero.

Jim’s philosophy goes far beyond farming. He teaches that a balanced, fulfilling life comes from working with nature, not against it — where the goal is nourishment and community, not accumulation.
