Archaeological Survey at by Scripps Institution of Oceanography and documented by Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown

Scripps completed a five-day archaeological survey at Anacapa Island in aboard the R/V Shearwater. The mission was to locate WWII military aircraft lost in training missions with lost crewmen missing in action. The first year, of a three-year mission focused on one aircraft, a Grumman Avenger TBF1 lost in a midair collision off Anacapa Island in 1945. Additional aircraft are lost off other islands and will be part of future missions. The archaeological survey was conducted using four autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) providing side scan sonar data and a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to document possible targets at depths too deep for diver confirmation. The mission Project Recovery is coordinated with government stakeholders that include Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, National Park Service, Naval History Heritage Command, and Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). The initial results in the field did not verify the location of the targeted aircraft, but a modern shipwreck was surveyed near the island that was identified as a target from the NOAA Ship Rainier survey in 2017. Further data interpretation will continue post mission and seafloor mapping data will be shared. The Discovery Channel’s production Expedition Unknown hosted by Josh Gates spent two days aboard the R/V Shearwater filming the science team and Shearwater crew conducting the remote sensing surveys and ROV dives. U.S. soldiers lost in training missions are not among the listed missing by the DPAA, so the documentary hopes to provide public and congressional support for listing the soldiers as MIAs, therefore no NOAA interviews were given.

Significance: Discoveries of lost military aircraft working in partnership with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography for Project Recovery, connect the public to NOAA’s missions of survey, exploration, science and stewardship. The discovery of these military grave sites may be important to the family descendants of the lost U.S. soldiers and hopefully will provide some closure.
