Built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin of the Bengal Army, Golghar was originally designed as a granary to address recurring famines in the region. The granary was constructed in response to the devastating Bengal Famine of 1770, which resulted in massive loss of life due to food shortages. To prevent future crises, Governor-General Warren Hastings ordered the construction of large grain storage facilities across the region, and Golghar became one of the largest among them.

Golghar is a massive, beehive-shaped structure built of solid brickwork without the use of any supporting pillars. Its unique architecture includes thick walls and a large dome, which makes it stand out among colonial-era buildings. The granary is 29 meters high and its walls are 3.6 meters thick. The structure features two spiral staircases winding around its exterior, allowing workers to carry grain to the top and pour it inside through an opening at the apex.

Although designed to hold 140,000 tons of grain, Golghar was never fully utilized. A minor flaw in its construction—the lack of a vent at the top—meant that storing large quantities of grain caused the structure to expand and risk cracking. As a result, it gradually became obsolete as a granary.
