3. Golghar, Patna
Golghar is one of the most iconic landmarks of Patna and an architectural wonder constructed during the British colonial era. Built in 1786 by Captain John Garstin of the Bengal Army, Golghar was originally designed as a granary to address recurring famines in the region. It reflects British engineering techniques and serves as both a historical structure and a popular tourist attraction today.
The granary was constructed in response to the devastating Bengal Famine of 1770, which resulted in massive loss of life due to food shortages. To prevent future crises, Governor-General Warren Hastings ordered the construction of large grain storage facilities across the region, and Golghar became one of the largest among them.
Golghar is a massive, beehive-shaped structure built of solid brickwork without the use of any supporting pillars. Its unique architecture includes thick walls and a large dome, which makes it stand out among colonial-era buildings. The granary is 29 meters high and its walls are 3.6 meters thick. The structure features two spiral staircases winding around its exterior, allowing workers to carry grain to the top and pour it inside through an opening at the apex.
Although designed to hold 140,000 tons of grain, Golghar was never fully utilized. A minor flaw in its construction—the lack of a vent at the top—meant that storing large quantities of grain caused the structure to expand and risk cracking. As a result, it gradually became obsolete as a granary.
Over time, Golghar transformed from a utilitarian structure into a heritage site and recreation point. The top of the building offers a panoramic view of the city of Patna, the Ganges River, and surrounding landscapes, making it a popular spot for photography and sightseeing. The lush gardens around the structure add to its charm and serve as a peaceful retreat for locals and tourists.
In recent years, the Bihar government and ASI have undertaken several restoration initiatives to preserve Golghar’s historical value. Sound and light shows were introduced to narrate its history and importance, although they have been periodically paused for renovation work.
Golghar stands as a reminder of the colonial era’s attempts at disaster management and early engineering innovations. Its massive scale, unique design, and historical relevance make it one of Patna’s most important landmarks. Today, it attracts visitors from across the country who come to admire its structure, learn about its history, and enjoy the scenic views from its summit.
