This week's special guest at the bird pond was a little Winter Wrens. Winter Wrens are much smaller than our resident Carolina Wren - and they really blend in with all the leaves on the ground, so they're hard to see. I've only got a good look at one once several years ago. I didn't realize just how small they are until I saw this one in the bird pond. I looked them up and found that they are the smallest of the North American wrens. And they have a short little tail that's pretty adorable! Aside from our special little visitor, we continue to get a mix of migrating birds and residents. As of mid-week there were still a couple Summer Tanagers around but I think they may be on their way sound now. It's very quiet around here. The summer visitors are some of the most vocal birds, particularly the Vireos. And the hummingbirds. For such tiny little birds, they add a lot to the summer soundscape.
I saw both Ruby-crowned and Golden-crowned kinglets this week. No other winter arrivals yet. Although I think I've heard a flicker. The Juncos probably won't arrive until November. Song Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Hermit Thrushes should start to arrive soon, I think.
Thanks for watching! Stay safe out there and I'll see you next week!
