Montana came together worse and somehow better than anticipated. While the Big Sky state has some unique rules that govern the regulations of the WNTC, we tried our best to find a means of fishing for wild "stream" fish and catching the qualified "stocked" WCT that are required for the challenge.
We started at a southern MT lake and put 7 hours into the first day and 4 miles total of float tubing. Zero fish caught. We drove around the area at dusk and decided to hit the stream nearby in the morning. We were met with native grayling and some fantastic cutthroat trout. This creek was so great, there will be a specific episode about it later after this episode*
After getting our skunk off at the creek, I put another 1.5 hours into the first lake and decided it wasn't going to happen. We drove 2 hours north to Butte where we fished Homestake Lake which is on the WNTC map for Montana. We didn't have to fish long before we got into them. The fish were not of the "wild" quality we wanted to see but after the grind we faced, we couldn't have been happier. The icing on the cake was a wild bull moose swimming across the lake and hanging out with us for a good 45 minutes.
So Montana came together full circle after a grindy start and uncertain outlook and we came out so grateful for the experience..
