At The Dodo, we set out to understand what truly helps dogs stay calm when their people leave the house. We filmed this Dog TV video on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay, capturing the most peaceful moments of the day — soft sunrise light as the world wakes up, warm sunsets as it winds down, and long stretches in between where gentle waves and shifting wind create a steady, soothing rhythm.

Our producer Indiana watched her senior dog, Telly, fall asleep on the deck listening to these same sounds again and again. The slow shoreline motion and familiar ambient audio consistently helped him relax most during quiet hours and just before departures. That real-life observation became the foundation for this video.

As Mindy Waite, PhD (CAAB), a Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist at Senior Tail Waggers, told us at The Dodo, sound environments can be especially helpful for some dogs when they’re home alone:
“Many dogs are going to benefit from having the TV or radio on when you leave, as this can help mask sounds from inside and outside the home — like people walking by, delivery trucks, or construction — which may otherwise cause reactions.”
