Both leaders also virtually inaugurated a new runway at Hanimadhoo Airport in the Maldives. Earlier, President Muizzu was welcomed at India's Rashtrapati Bhavan by President Droupadi Murmu and PM Modi. Muizzu is in India for a five-day visit amid the island nation's deteriorating financial situation. The Maldives is facing a potential debt default as its foreign exchange reserves have dropped to $440 million. Before arriving in India, President Muizzu said that India is ready to "ease our burden and find solutions." In an interview with an Indian publication on October 6, he emphasised India's crucial role. His visit is seen as a step towards mending ties between the two nations. Seen as close to China, President Muizzu also reiterated his commitment to ensuring that the Maldives would never undermine India's security. Following New Delhi, he is scheduled to visit Mumbai and Bengaluru.
