LEAD IN
Islam, which was suppressed during Communist rule in Kazakhstan, is experiencing something of a revival.
In one orphanage, children are being taught the Quran as a way to live a more peaceful and disciplined life.
STORYLINE
The children of Parzant Family Home orphanage pray five times a day.
The forty children all wear Islamic dress and headscarves. Older boys and some of the younger ones can recite from the Quran.
Elmurad is the youngest orphan at Parzant.
He was just a baby when he was brought to the home, and now he is three.
But everyone gives him lots of attention, and he seems to enjoy taking part in the group prayers.
Parzant is known as a 'family style' home.
The majority of the forty young people who live here are school and pre-school age.
All must come and wash, before doing 'namaz' in a prayer room that functions as a mosque.
According to government figures there are more than 16,000 children living in children's homes and orphanages in Kazakhstan, the vast majority of them are state-run secular institutions.
