Straight outta Riverside, California, Robert Sesma describes his music as pscyh-pop, but that sells short the array of influences and sound textures Sesma is able to incorporate into his music. Yes, with tracks like the attached “Souls” off his recent album of the same name, listeners will quickly spot the influence of acts like Tame Impala, Melody’s Echo Chamber, and Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Surely those artists, with their spacey synth layers, driving far-out percussion, and winding vocals form the foreground of Sesma’s sound, but from there the record becomes increasingly confident in the sorts of sounds it plays with. Suddenly the tracks find an influx of bedroom pop influence, as well as shades of dream pop, and even shoegaze. The sense we get is an artist who, above all, loves indie music and is excited to explore all the potential he has within that form. Many of the tracks emphasize Sesma’s skillful, laid back yet precise guitar skills. But then look also at a track like “Soulmate” on the record, which features a driving nearly R&B style bass line filtered through the chill-intimate vibes we associate more with an act like Mac Demarco. But the track pushes further, bringing in a wind section that completely alters the texture of the song, adding a dissonance that brings the emotional subtext of the song to the forefront. These are the types of risks that Robert Sesma’s music takes, and which typically seem to pay off for the talented young artist. With his next endeavor set to be more hip-hop oriented, it’s clear this is someone who isn’t interested in putting limits on what he can achieve sonically.
