Tussen 1958 en 1962 vond in China de zogenaamde 'Grote Sprong Voorwaarts'' plaats. De Chinese leider Mao Zedong wilde in vijf jaar tijd het arme, agrarische China ombouwen tot een moderne, industriële communistische grootmacht. Deze poging liep uit op een grote mislukking.
