The Middle East is once again witnessing intense geopolitical turmoil, raising fears of a wider regional conflict and even a global economic shock. In this thought-provoking analysis, educator Shabbir Sir explores the deeper historical roots behind the escalating tensions involving Israel, Iran, and the wider Arab region.
Many analysts link today’s crisis to the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, which triggered massive retaliatory operations and heightened tensions across the region—from Gaza Strip to West Bank and beyond. But according to this perspective, the roots of the conflict may go much deeper than recent events.
At the center of the discussion is Benjamin Netanyahu, whose political ideology and strategic worldview have shaped Israel’s security policies for decades. The story traces back to the dramatic Operation Entebbe, one of the most daring rescue operations in modern history.
In 1976, an Air France flight hijacked by militants was diverted to Entebbe Airport, where hostages were held with the support of Uganda’s dictator Idi Amin. Israeli commandos launched a bold long-distance raid to rescue the hostages. While the mission was largely successful, the commander Yonatan Netanyahu was killed during the operation.
His death profoundly shaped the life of Benjamin Netanyahu, who later entered politics and developed a security doctrine deeply influenced by his father Benzion Netanyahu—a scholar who believed survival required uncompromising strength.
Over the decades, Netanyahu’s policies have often opposed the Oslo Accords, which aimed for a two-state solution between Israelis and Palestinians. Instead, his approach has emphasized military strength, strategic alliances, and a hardline stance against perceived threats—especially from Iran and groups like Hezbollah and the Houthis.
This video raises a powerful question:
Is the Middle East conflict purely geopolitical, or has it also been shaped by the ideology, experiences, and personal history of one influential leader?
Understanding this complex intersection of history, geopolitics, ideology, and personal trauma is essential for students of international relations, geopolitics, and competitive exams like UPSC.
Watch this analysis to explore how past events—from Entebbe to modern-day conflicts—continue to influence the fragile stability of the Middle East.
