Black streaks are actually a hearty form of algae called gloeocapsa magma. This algae travels by the air, and once it finds a place with food and moisture, it lives and spreads. Unfortuantely, do to material roofs are made of, and because shaded areas of the roof retain moisture, this becomes the perfect place for algae to make a home.

Once the algae begins to eat the components of your roof, immediately the roof begins to deteriorate. In a lot cases, people replace there roofs in as little as 15 years for a 30 year shingle. Think, if you spend $10000 for a roof, and in 15 years do it again, youve just spend $20000 in 30 years. But having your roof cleaned will give you the full 30 years, so that you are only spending $10000 in the course of 30 years. Kinda makes sense!

Why does it cause streaks?

When the algae lands, it begins to feed. Then the rain comes and washes the algae downward, and then it feeds there too! Then the rain washes it downward more, and it feeds there too. Before long, the algae has created this ugly black streak all the way down the roof.

Moss retains moisture and creates a root system... obvious problem.

Lichen is a double fungus and the worst of all! It can create a pit in the shingle in as little as 3 years.

All this can be resolved with a routine roof cleaning - appx every 5-8 years. And its totally affordable!!
