In this video, we visit the Fort St. George Museum in Chennai, one of the most important historical places connected to British rule in India. Along with my friends Prakalya, Sivasankari, Nikita, Harish, and Nitish, we traveled from Tambaram to Chennai Park by train and walked nearly 2 kilometers to reach the museum.
The Fort St. George Museum is located inside the Secretariat complex, so there is heavy security before entering. Inside the museum, we explored three floors filled with historical objects from the British colonial period.
The museum displays many fascinating items such as cannons, medals, flags, British uniforms, weapons, ceramic plates, and coins from different periods of British-ruled India. One of the most interesting objects we saw was a fragment of a shell fired from the famous German warship Emden, which attacked Madras during the early days of the First World War.
We also saw an old Bible printed in 1660, marble statues, paintings made by the British that show their views about Indian society, and portraits of British kings, queens, and governors. Another highlight of the museum was the augmented reality display and the first Indian flag that was hoisted at Fort St. George.
This museum gives us a deeper understanding of the history of colonial Madras and the impact of British rule in India.
