Michigan Public Safety Communication System (MPSCS) provides a stable, secure framework for interoperable communications among local, state, federal, tribal and private first responders and supplies a public safety communication resource for citizens.
MPSCS handles the second-largest trunked communication system in the world, including administration of a statewide 800/700 MHz digital trunked radio communication network spanning 59,415 square miles and including more than 246 radio towers and more than 74,000 radios.
The system is at the forefront of public safety communications. It provides rapid response and facilitates cooperation of emergency personnel through statewide coverage and advanced technology.
Motorola Solutions is the provider for the MPSCS, this ASTRO 25 system provides the foundation for reliable mission-critical voice today while having always ready communications for any incident or natural disaster in the future. ASTRO 25 systems have the flexibility to add features and capabilities with simple software updates when it is needed.

Tim Burgois. We made a mutual choice to go on the system 11 years ago. At the time, the city of Kalamazoo had an aging analog trunked 800 system, so the three agencies had a mutual need at the same time to upgrade.
00.26
Pat Parker. We had an old antiquated system that we had some problems with.
00.30
Lisa Hall. We were entering into some serious coverage issues in the county for first responders especially after narrow banding and this became a large first responders concern.
We were like an island. We did not have communications with our surrounding counties and that became difficult for the things like police chases, fire mutual-aid.
00.48
Tim Burgois. We were previously tethered to systems that had limited range. So, it was very possible in the course of normal operations to exceed the range of the radio system. This is dangerous.
01.03
Pat Parker. We have to be able to make sure that if a firefighter is in trouble that we are able to rescue them, but we also need to have scene size up so we know what’s going on, what assets, what resources we need to deploy in order to solve the problem at hand.
Safety of our firefighters, safety of our citizens is paramount, so you have to have equipment that works.
01.25
Tim Burgois. We researched all of our options and MPSCS was the best solution to our situation.
01.32
Lisa Hall. Last year as a county, we made a decision to come onto the MPSCS system and purchase Motorola 6000 and 7000 radios.
01.41
Jeff Friedland. Being a part of the state system provided us far better coverage than our system did within St. Clair County.
01.47
Jon Deming. We have instantaneous communication via hand held basically from shore to shore and from about M55 North to the bridge.
If we were not part of the system and having the capability of using all the sate resources in the communication system, it would be a struggle financially for the county to provide the same coverage, the same back up, the same redundancy that we have now.
02.17
Jeff Friedland. I can’t even describe the value. This is not a land mobile radio system. It’s broader. It’s data. It’s avl potential.
02.29
Pat Parker. The nice part of the MPSCS system is that you’ve got a system that’s cutting edge. It’s constantly being updated.
02.34
Lisa Hall. There’s a whole department of experts behind this radio system.
02.37
Pat Parker. You are going to technology time out on your old equipment, so you are going to have to pay the piper sooner or later and this is a time you should really consider the MPSCS system.
02.46
Jeff Friedland. There are risks of not joining. Your going to have those events that are going to require tactical operations, water supply, you can’t do that on one channel.
02.57
Tim Burgois. It’s very, very easy now to assist other agencies and to know that regardless of where that event goes, that radio system will cover this.
03.06
Jon Deming. Right now we have the best of the best and we are very happy with what we are getting out of this.
03.10
Lisa Hall. What’s important to us at Midland County 911 for our community is that they know they have a professional and efficient team on the other side of the phone answering the call.
03.20
Pat Parker. It’s just rewarding for me to come here everyday and know that we are here to help people.
03.26
Jon Deming. You know satisfaction everyday. We see something and when we can get good care to people and do some great things out there for the public, it’s rewarding.
