STORYLINE :
Residents fled a town in Shangla district in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan on Saturday, as clashes between government forces and militants in the area continued.
One resident from the town of Tehsil Alpurai told AP Television that the area was unsafe, and people were finally moving out as the situation was further deteriorating.
"It is not safe here, the situation is getting worse everyday. People are moving their families to safer areas, that is why we have decided to move out," Irfan Gul said.
Bazaars and markets remained deserted in Shangla district on Saturday.
"There is no solution to this impending problem. There were police and security arrangements available to us earlier, so there was hope. They have all left now," Irfan Gul said.
Fierce fighting has been taking place in the bordering districts of Shangla and Swat.
Troops in Swat, are battling supporters from Maulana Fazlullah, a cleric who has asked his men to wage holy war against the army.
The military have said previously that they have been assaulting hideouts in various parts of the district, where militants were still controlling many towns and villages.
