This is about a recent hike to a place curiously named Bumpass Hell in Lassen Volcanic National Park in Northern California. The trail into Lassen's largest and most popular hydrothermal area, Bumpass Hell is not long and difficult. The shorter of 2 trails is just about 3 miles round-trip and of moderate difficulty. From there you can return back to the area of Emerald Lake or continue to Cold Boiling Lake for some more spectacular views along the trail.
The Hell itself is spectacular, hell of bubbling mud-pots, acid steams, and super hot steaming acidic runoff. All this created by Mother Nature in particular by rainwater and melted snow seeping deep into the ground where it meets molten lava and gets super heated and pushed up to the surface.
At this point steam is about 300 degrees F.
