In this video — the first Nigerian prisoner of war who came from extreme poverty, where the average salary is about $10 a month — enough to buy only around 13 liters of gasoline or a couple of loaves of bread — and believed life in Russia would be better. He was recruited through fake “construction job” invitations, given a plane ticket for $700–800, and in Moscow training camps he was forced to sign a military contract. They gave him three rounds for his rifle and sent him with five other Africans to plant a Russian flag under a drone so the commanders could report a “territory capture.”
The mission was simple: walk there, stick the flag in the ground, die — classic cannon fodder. He was wounded in the leg, captured, and is now being treated (amputation is possible). Meanwhile, back in Nigeria he faces up to 12 years in prison for mercenary activity.
