Scripps College is a private liberal arts women's college in Claremont, California, founded in 1926 by journalist and philanthropist Ellen Browning Scripps. It is a member of The Claremont Colleges consortium, often referred to as the "5Cs," which includes Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Pomona College, Pitzer College, and Harvey Mudd College, along with Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. This consortium allows Scripps students to benefit from the resources, courses, and activities of a larger co-educational institution while still experiencing the advantages of a women's college environment. The college is recognized for its academic excellence, with a strong emphasis on the humanities and an extensive interdisciplinary core curriculum. The college's motto, "Incipit Vita Nova" ("Here Begins New Life"), reflects its commitment to developing students' abilities to think clearly and independently, and to live confidently and courageously.
Scripps offers a rigorous academic program with small class sizes, averaging 16 students, and a student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1. The curriculum focuses on interdisciplinary humanities, combined with training in specific disciplines. General requirements include courses in mathematics, fine arts, letters, natural sciences, social sciences, foreign language, women's/gender studies, and race/ethnic studies. All first-year students take a writing course, and every graduating student must complete a senior thesis or project. The Core Curriculum in Interdisciplinary Studies is a cornerstone of the academic experience, encouraging critical thinking and challenging ideas through a sequence of three classes.Students at Scripps can cross-register for classes and enroll in majors at any of the other undergraduate schools within The Claremont Colleges. Popular majors include Political Science and Government, Research and Experimental Psychology, Biology/Biological Sciences, English Language and Literature, Environmental Science, Neuroscience, Mass Communication/Media Studies, and Econometrics and Quantitative Economics.
A significant advantage of attending Scripps, as highlighted by students, is the supportive and collaborative community. Unlike some co-educational environments that can foster intense competition, Scripps cultivates an atmosphere where students support each other's success, sharing resources and knowledge. This collaborative spirit extends to academic settings, where students feel encouraged to ask questions and voice their opinions without fear of being "mansplained to or belittled."
Scripps emphasizes empowerment and leadership development, with resources like the Laspa Center for Leadership, which offers training and programs to strengthen women's leadership skills. Students often report increased confidence and a greater willingness to advocate for themselves, both in academic and professional settings, as a result of their Scripps experience. Graduates of women's colleges, including Scripps, are more likely to major in STEM fields, serve in leadership roles, earn graduate degrees, and hold corporate leadership positions.
While historically a women's college, Scripps College is inclusive of multiple gender identities, welcoming transgender women, non-binary students, and other gender non-conforming individuals. This broad and diverse student body contributes to a nuanced understanding of female identity and creates an environment where students are encouraged to express themselves freely and celebrate differences. Consequently, frequently recognized for its beautiful campus, designed in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The campus offers interactive landscaping elements, including a rose garden and fruit trees, and even produces award-winning olive oil from its olive trees.
Student life at Scripps is vibrant, with numerous registered clubs and organizations, and students frequently participate in 5C clubs alongside students from the other Claremont Colleges. The college is a residential campus, with nine halls and on-campus apartments providing living arrangements for all four years of undergraduate study. Scripps athletes compete as part of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags and Athenas, participating in NCAA Division III sports. The school is regarded as the premier women's college on the West Coast of the United States. It consistently ranks highly among liberal arts colleges nationally and is recognized for its value and social mobility.
