WHAT IS EASTER
Million of people around the world are getting ready to celebrate Easter! So what is it? And why all the eggs? For some people, Easter is about gorging out on Chocolate. For others, it's a really important religious holiday. Christians believe Good Friday represents the day Jesus Christ died on the cross, which is why you see so many hot cross buns around this time of year. And Easter Sunday is a celebration of the day when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead. Now you might be wondering, what's this all got to do with rabbits and eggs. Well in the Northern hemisphere, Easter coincides with start of spring, which was once marked by a Pagan festival called Eostre. And many think that's where the word Easter comes from. Eostre was all about new life and hope, hence the eggs and the bunnies. Christians also celebrate new life on Easter Sunday, so the eggs are a fitting symbol. Why are they chocolate, well, because chocolate is yummy. That's why.
LEADER'S DEBATE
Anthony Albanese and Peter Dutton are dusting themselves off today after a big debate last night! It's the second time the leaders have gone head to head live, this time on the ABC at Parramatta. They talked about the big campaign issues, like housing, energy, spending, climate change, and how they feel about the US president. As for the winner, well, that really depends on your point of view, but they'll have another chance to convince us next Tuesday.
COUCH SURFING
Now let's go to Darwin where hundreds of people have gathered to watch couches on the move. Welcome to the NT's annual couch surfing event! Where racing's the game, and the strategy is... well, to win. But behind the couch is a pretty important cause. You see, the NT has 12 times the national average rate of homelessness. And half the people without a house are young people. Some of them spend time staying with friends, otherwise known as "couch surfing". So event organisers decided to take it literally, and have a bit of fun, all while raising awareness for those who are doing it tough. Racers found some pretty creative ways to decorate their couches. And the winners of the day? Well, they said the biggest prize was making a difference.
OLD SKATER
First up to Spain, and a skater with Eggs-perience! 88-year-old Juanjo here might just be the oldest skateboarder to carve up his local bowl. He only started skateboarding at the age of 70, as a way to stay fit, and keep himself entertained. But says that if it were a bit more affordable, he'd much rather do snow sports. Fair enough.
MOUNTAIN CLIMB RECORD
Speaking of eggs-treme sports, two climbers in Switzerland have just broken a 21 year old record for the fastest time scaling the north faces of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau mountains. Nicolas Hojac and Philipp Brugger started the climb at 1am and managed to finish in 15 and a half hours, nearly 10 hours faster than the previous record.
ZOO EGGS
And finally to eggs. Zoos in Europe have made special Easter treats for some of their animals. Like these meerkats in Germany, who got eggs stuffed with hay and mealworms. My favourite. Or these penguins in England who got cardboard egg cut-outs with little fish sticking out the top of them. But spare a thought for these raccoons who have just been given regular boiled.
