"I think it's just about time that this happened. We are the good people, we're vetted more than anybody else, except maybe a Secret Service agent."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Tom King, President of the plaintiff New York State Rifle and Pistol Association:
"More danger than there is right now? I think that what we have found and what the statistics will bear out is that anywhere where universal pistol permit carrying has been approved, the crime rate has gone down. Because the criminals are just as worried about confronting someone who has a gun as the people who are unarmed are worried about being confronted by an armed criminal."

STORYLINE:
The Supreme Court said Thursday that Americans have a right to carry guns in public, a major expansion of gun rights.
The court struck down a New York gun law in a ruling expected to directly impact half a dozen other populous states.
The justices' 6-3 decision is expected to allow more people to legally carry guns on the streets of the nation's largest cities. It's high court's first major gun decision in more than a decade.
Tom King, president of the plaintiff New York State Rifle and Pistol Association, said he was relieved.
"What it's saying is, is that if you're a legal, lawful citizen, they can't take your right to keep and bear arms away from you. I mean, I think it's just that simple," said King.
Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority that the Constitution protects "an individual's right to carry a handgun for self-defense outside the home."
