On April 12 2023, we opened the 2023 Tobacco buying season at Kanengo Auction Floors in Lilongwe
This year, we have 10 buyers, two mors will join later.
The following is expected during the 2023 market season;
• 126 million kilograms of tobacco to be sold this season as compared to 85 million kilograms produced last season. i.e. an increase of 48%.
• Trade Demand is at 170 million Kilograms.
• The Commission expects competitive prices to prevail as it was during last season despite a 48% volume increase.
The tobacco volumes are shared among the four tobacco-selling floors as follows;
. Lilongwe Floors, 46%
. Mzuzu Floors, 24%
. Chinkhoma Floors, 21%
. Limbe, 9%
In the afternoon, we took time to address farmers and encouraged them to do a good job in grading their tobacco to avoid incidences where their tobacco is rejected for obvious reasons.
We also assured them that we will protect them by making sure that we have daily reports of how sales are taking place, and using the law against those who are stealing from our farmers.
