How to SEW a Medical Face Mask // DIY Face Mask Tutorial

We have gone from making baby clothes to making masks for our hospital workers!

SUPPLIES:
2 pieces 100% cotton fabric: 6" x 9" (You can also cut up old 100% cotton t-shirts!)
2 elastic strips: 1/8" or 1/4" x 8” to go over N95 elastics
2 elastic strips for women/men: 7"
2 elastic strips for children: 5.5"

ALTERNATE SIZING:
7" x 9" - adult male
6" x 9" - adult female
5" x 7" - child size, make elastic 5.5" long.

** Masks are re-usable, but must be sanitized before/after each use! Machine wash warm and tumble dry low. **

SEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CLOTH MASKS

PLEASE NOTE THESE WILL NOT REPLACE SURGICAL GRADE MASKS. THEY CAN GO LAYERED OVER MEDICAL GRADE MASKS OR IN SITUATIONS WHERE CLOTH MASKS WILL BE EFFECTIVE. NEW RESEARCH RECOMMENDS THAT WE SHOULD ALL WEAR FACE MASKS WHEN OUTSIDE.

Materials Needed
1. 100% tightly woven cotton fabric
2. Rotary cutter or scissors
3. Measuring tape
4. Elastic, ribbon, thread

5. Cut fabric 9" by 6" for an adult or 7.5" by 5" for a child. Be sure any fabric design is placed horizontally.
6. CUT ELASTICS AT 8” to go over the N95. USE RIBBON TIES IF YOU DON’T HAVE ANY ELASTIC. Ribbon ties should be 20” long at each corner.
7. Put right sides of fabric together. Use tightly woven cotton and light colored fabric if possible. Try to use a different fabric for the back of the mask.

8. Starting at the right top corner of the mask, sew with the elastic under and straight down to the right bottom corner. Sew the elastic underneath.
9. Sew to the next corner, stop in the middle and leave an opening on the bottom center. Bring the other end of the elastic to the corner and sew a few stitches forward and back. Go straight up sew the other end of the elastic and finish sewing the top of the rectangle.
10. Stop, cut the thread. Turn inside out.
11. Pin three tucks on each side of the mask. Make sure the tucks are the same direction. The total width should be 3” long.
12. Sew around the edge of the mask twice.
