Program Notes:
As a native of a land that lacks nature trees, I find forests fascinating. There are so many creatures that abide within, and so many various noises and life-cycles that are fostered by one entity. It can almost be dizzying inside of this sea of green foliage, but within lies life and beauty. This piece is a contemplation on the overwhelming nature of these spaces, and my respect for them. The green can be oppressive, and the rustling and chitter-chatter of chipmunks, squirrels, birds, and bugs all create a sensation that is filled with sameness but with the occasional individuated event that puts the experience over the top. The latter half of the work is my prayer, a reflection on the times when forests change from dusk to full night. The birds quiet down, the air seemingly becomes gelatinous as the world slows, and the stars beckon to shine through small holes in the canopy’s leaves, giving us a glimpse at something more beautiful than we really deserve to see.
