Muammar Gaddafi (1942–2011) was a Libyan military officer and political leader who ruled Libya for more than four decades. Born into a Bedouin family, he rose to power in 1969 after leading a bloodless coup that overthrew King Idris.

Gaddafi established a political system he called the Jamahiriya, claiming it was a form of direct democracy, though in practice he held near-absolute power. He promoted Arab nationalism, Pan-Africanism, and a state-controlled economy funded by Libya’s vast oil wealth. Under his rule, Libya experienced improvements in education, infrastructure, and social programs, but also faced authoritarian repression, human rights abuses, and strict political control.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Gaddafi became a highly controversial figure on the global stage, accused by Western governments of supporting militant groups and terrorism. Relations with the West eventually improved in the 2000s after Libya agreed to abandon its nuclear program and compensate victims of past attacks.

In 2011, during the Arab Spring, widespread protests against his regime escalated into a civil war. NATO intervened militarily in support of rebel forces. Gaddafi was captured and killed on October 20, 2011, marking the end of his 42-year rule.
