STORYLINE
As Pope John Paul lies in a Rome hospital, the question being asked is who are the people running the Vatican in his absence and what role will they play if he continues to be incapacitated?
In the Catholic church hierarchy Popes are chosen from amongst the so-called College of Cardinals - and a number of cardinals will now step forward and play influential roles.
The longer the Pope remains unable to perform all the duties of office the more these men will also be seen as potential "king makers" in the Papal succession.
Vatican analyst, and former "Time" Rome Bureau Chief, Wilton Winn has helped APTN look at the power behind the Papal throne.
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger "is one of the most important men in the Vatican right now, he''s the watchdog of the faith, " according to Winn.
The man many view as the Vatican''s number two man, Angelo Sodano, is "the secretary of state", according to Winn.
He has been running the day to day machinery of the vatican for years and "has built up tremendous prestige all over the world wherever the church is present."
However, the man thought to have the ear of the cardinals is Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, the head of the Congregation for Bishops.
Winn says of Re, "some people think he''s the strongest man in the Vatican today."
Another man of huge influence is Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the vicar of Rome, who runs the diocese of Rome for the pontiff.
