Old Time Radio Classic Western Shows from the Golden Age of Radio
After Marshal Dillon is forced to kill no-good Alvin Grebb, his brother Billy seems to be going bad as well! Two years ago, Matt Dillon had run Elvin Grebb out of town letting him get away with everything but murder for his mother’s sake. And now Elvin Grebb was back in Dodge and Matt tells him this time there won’t be a second chance. Then Matt realizes he is only keeping him talking while his gang raids the bank. Matt tries to arrest him but Grebb draws his gun.
Gunsmoke was a popular radio western that aired from 1952 to 1961 on CBS. It was created by Norman Macdonnell and John Meston and was known for its gritty, realistic portrayal of the Old West. The show was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the late 19th century and followed U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon as he tried to maintain law and order in the often-violent frontier town.
Unlike many earlier westerns, Gunsmoke was darker and more mature, dealing with complex moral dilemmas, justice, and the harsh realities of life in the West. The radio version starred William Conrad as Matt Dillon, with supporting characters like Doc Adams (Howard McNear), Chester Proudfoot (Parley Baer), and Miss Kitty Russell (Georgia Ellis). The scripts were well-written and often had a noir-like quality, making it one of the most critically acclaimed radio dramas of its time.
The show later transitioned to television in 1955, running for 20 seasons with James Arness taking over the role of Matt Dillon. While the TV version had a slightly different tone, the radio series remains a classic example of high-quality radio storytelling.
"Classic old-time radio, vintage radio shows, golden age of radio, OTR mystery, classic radio drama, and Westerns."
