There are 3 different license classifications available for plumbers under the Louisiana State Plumbing Board:

Tradesman License
Journeyman Plumber License
Master Plumber License

Each license has specific scope of work and requirements.

Tradesman Scope of work:

Repair existing plumbing in one– and two-family dwellings
Repairs to existing plumbing systems
Clearing of stoppages 
Repairing leaks
(Under direction of a master plumber)

Tradesman Requirements:

Hold a current apprenticeship registration through SPBL
2 Years (4,000 hours) of experience
Under direct supervision of a licensed journeyman or master plumber

Tradesman Examination:

Part I

80 Questions
Open Book
Computerized Test
70% Score Required to Pass
3-hour examination

Definitions and General Regulations
General Health and Safety Knowledge
General Plumbing Repair and Service
Trade Knowledge
Plumbing Fixtures and Fixtures Fittings
Sanitary Drainage and Vents
Traps and Indirect Waste
Water Supply and Distribution Systems

In-person Practical: Include a floor plan project, screw pipe project, and a copper project



Journeyman License Scope of work:

Repair existing plumbing in one– and two-family dwellings
Repairs to existing plumbing systems
Clearing of stoppages
Repairing leaks and Installation of Plumbing Systems (Under the supervision of a Master Plumber)

Journeyman License requirements:

Hold a current apprenticeship registration through the SPBL
5 years (8,000 hours) of experience
You may qualify for a waiver if you have W-2's or payroll documentation of your experience with a licensed plumbing company

Computerized Test
70% Score Required to Pass
3 hour examination

All Residential and Commercial Plumbing Work
Repair existing plumbing in all structures
Repairs to existing plumbing systems
Installation of all Plumbing Systems 
Pulling of Building Permits

Master Plumber requirements:

Hold a current Journeyman Plumbers License, Restricted Master Plumbers License, or Engineering License

Master Plumber Examination:

Part I: General Plumbing
Part II: Practical Plumbing
Part III: Business and Law
