Spoken poetry inspired by Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dalloway":
The privacy of the soul
One may weep if no one saw.
One may do as one chooses
In the privacy of the soul.
A privilege of loneliness:
The drip drip of one impression
After another, far down
Into the dark cellar
For no one to know.
A solitude, a dignity, a gulf
One cannot ruin,
Without self-respect's downfall,
Even between wife and husband.
A peace, a happiness,
Alone together,
Wishing one to merely be
Who they are.
The privacy of the soul:
Priceless, after all.
