This is a very easy crochet & knitting project. I was inspired by the lovely woven cowl asymmetrical wrap that Jennifer Lawrence wore as Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger games 2 Catching fire. I had looked for patterns to make one but I wanted a wrap that was mainly crochet and could be worked as one piece. This wrap is made in one piece with only a bit of seaming on the side.I have the pattern in printable PDF form and more pictures on my blog: http://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com...
Materials:
320 yards of 4 ply worsted weight yarn
320 yards fancy yarn (I used a 31% polyester-30% acrylic-25% wool-14% alpaca blend medium weight yarn)
N15 (10mm) crochet hook
#11, #13, #15 circular needles (I used Denise interchangeable needles so I could keep my yarn on the cable and swap out the needles.)
Stitch markers or contrasting yarn scraps
yarn needle
scissors
The garment is worked in one piece. Both yarns are held together and knit as one. OR you could use a super bulky yarn.
The main body
Chain 72 (or so, the number is not really important, go bigger if you are larger than me or smaller if you are petite, I wear a size 8 dress for reference). Join chain being careful not to twist stitches. Chain 2, Double Crochet (that's treble/triple crochet for you UK folks) in each stitch and join round with a slip stitch. Repeat row 6 times. Fold in half and place stitch marker (or contrasting scrap of yarn) on each side. Now you will be working the front and back separately. Turn your work, *chain 2 and DC in each chain to marker. Turn, DC in 3rd stitch from hook to marker. Turn your work and repeat from * until one stitch remains. Cut yarn with 2' tail and draw through loop. Repeat for other side making sure they match. You need the strait edges on the same side. Using the long tail seam up the strait side leaving a 10" gap for the armhole. Evenly DC around the edge (the tapers) if desired. Weave in ends.
The cowl: **note: this is the version I originally made. Look below for a crochet version **
Using #11 circular needles pick up every other gap between your DCs. I had 72 DCs around so I picked up 36 stitches. Knit all the way around until you have 1.5" of st stitch materiel. Note, the first round is a b*#$^ to knit but then it is smooth sailing! Switch to #13 circular needles and knit 2", the switch to #15 and knit 1.5" more. Now to make a floppy cowl you need to *K1 then increase by knitting into the front and back of the next stitch, K1, increase 1 all the way around and knit the next row. Repeat these 2 rows. Bind off by purling 2 tog. (wrap yarn clockwise) then transfer new stitch to left needle and repeat until one stitch remains then snip yarn leaving an 8" tail
l and draw yarn through loop and weave in ends.
Steam block the cowl and body if needed for drape. Wear your new wrap and be fabulous!
Crochet neck version: So, many of you told me that you don't knit and wanted a crochet version of the neckline, well here it is! The stitch pattern we are doing will make a ribbed cowl, it is very stunning!
Using a size n hook (or whatever you were crocheting with)
First round: Half-double Crochet (HDC) into every other stitch in the neck opening, join with slip stitch. Try and have an even number of stitches, crochet into an extra one if you have to to make the first round an even number.
Second Round: Chain 2, Double Crochet (DC) into the front post of the next stitch, DC in the back post of the next stitch and continue working from * to* in a spiral until the neck is as tall as you like (about 8″)stop when you are about 6 stitches from the start of the round. You can look for the tail of yarn left when you joined the neck. Weave in ends and wear it!
Finishing: When you are 6 stitches away from the start of the round switch from DC to HDC for 3 stitches then SC for 3 stitches and join to next stitch with a slip-stitch.
