Welcome home to my new dog!!!! (Still needs a name, leave suggestions in comments - thank you!!). His shelter name was Shadow and he is a 3 year old black and tan coonhound that was rescued by the Holmes County Dog Warden in Ohio. He and a few other dogs were severely neglected, but were saved and brought to the shelter in July where he has been getting care and waiting for his forever home!
I lost my 12 year old coonhound in June and his name was Ben and I felt that it was time I could open my heart and home to a new hound. I found Shadow on the shelter's instagram and pet finder acct. After reaching out and letting them know I was actually serious about adopting him and flying out to Ohio to meet him and fly him home with me, they were so excited and thought I would be a great fit for him!
I had never flown a dog on a plane and am happy to answer any questions! I flew my dog with Alaska Air, which I think is one of the only airlines you can fly a dog if you are not relocating for military reasons. The shelter and their veterinarian were so helpful with getting me all the proper veterinary paperwork: health certificate, vaccinations, and a temperature acclimation certificate. Alaska Air was so great to work with and answered all my questions. I flew him in the biggest airline approved kennel I could (a size 500 crate). I also made sure to meet all airline requirements for flying a dog such as when the dog last ate, pee pads for the kennel, water and food bowls in the kennel, etc.
I have now had this new dog (I promise I will name him soon!!) for five days! He is adjusting to his new life and we are so happy to have him here in Alaska with us!
