In “Fancy Man Blues,” the narrator declares that he is madly in love with a woman whose smile makes him fall in love and who he enjoys spending time with. Her apparent relationship with another man is the only issue. “Fancy Man Blues” serves as more evidence of the Stones’ enduring love of the blues, which has sustained them from their early London club performances. Rather than the more assertive Chicago blues of Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed and Slim Harpo bring out their seductive swamp blues in this song. This tape is from the AIR Studios Steel Wheels sessions.
Here we have Bill Wyman on bass (legend has it that when he first heard this song, he mistakenly believed it was written by Jimmy Reed) who is regrettably a bit lost in the mix, and Charlie on his Gretsch kit, making up the band’s original rhythm section. Chuck Leavell has an amazing piano role, with licks that can sway even the most ardent Billy Preston supporters. In this blues song, Mick is undoubtedly at the top of his vocal game, but he really elevates the song with two stunning harmonica solos that are full of sonority and phrasing.
