Thermoluminescence is a method for dating some types of ceramic, glass, burnt flint, and clay; however, it requires the destruction of a relatively significant amount of sample material. Energy is accumulated in the objects due to the natural radioactive radiation. When a sample is heated in a few seconds to 400 °C, the accumulated energy is released in the form of light and can be measured. We can only date objects that exposed to strong heating in the past when all energy was released from them and they started to accumulate it again. By measuring the emitted energy, we determine how long has passed since the material was last exposed to high temperatures, for example in the kiln.
