The Beadsmith’s 9-piece punch and dapping set has all the sizes you’ll need to begin. The kit comes with 3 main parts: the punch set, the dapping block and the stand. The punches are made of steel and come in a variety of sizes ranging from 3mm to 24mm, as well as an oval punch. The dapping block is 6.75 x 2 x .5-inch polished steel cube with various depression spheres that coordinate with the punch sizes. They all fit perfectly into the display stand, which is made of hardwood and has all the punch sizes clearly marked for easy organization. Most often used with dapping sets are metal blanks. It’s important to use a size that fits inside the well. Use a punch slightly smaller than the corresponding indentation in the doming block. Next choose an appropriate tool, such as a chasing hammer, which will ensure a weighted impact and provide a more accurate result. It is best to strike at a slight angle to have better control over the dome you are creating. Malleable metals such as pewter, sterling silver, aluminum, brass, copper, and nickel silver work best for this type of project. Use the punch and block set to create custom made earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and rings.
