Biathlon is one of the most demanding events at the Winter Olympics, blending cross-country skiing endurance with the precision of rifle shooting. The sport will return to the spotlight at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games, challenging athletes to ski miles of icy terrain while stopping to shoot targets under extreme physical stress.
Races range from 4.5 to more than 12 miles, with competitors stopping four times to shoot five targets each. Misses result in time penalties or extra laps — making accuracy just as important as speed. Despite decades of Olympic history, biathlon remains the only Winter Olympic sport in which the United States has never won a medal.
This Winter Games IQ explainer breaks down how biathlon works, where it started, and why it’s considered one of the toughest sports in the Olympics.
