With 70 original songs, Manchester's The Smiths created a poetic post-punk romantic soundtrack for the 1980s. They leaned into sensitive poetry and jangling guitars at a moment when drum machines and synths were king. So why did this incredible band break up, right at the peak of their powers and popularity?
