STORYLINE:

The opening of the trial of Saddam Hussein Wednesday provoked a strong reaction from some of the residents of Kuwait City.

Kuwait was invaded by 100-thousand Iraqi soldiers in 1990, a move that led to the first US-led action against Iraq.

Thousands of Kuwaitis were forcibly taken to Iraq and oilfields were set alight.

The former Iraqi dictator pleaded not guilty to a number of charges including premeditated murder and torture.

He argued with the judges, challenging the legitimacy of the court.

The 68 year-old Saddam and seven former members of his regime face could face the death penalty if convicted over the 1982 massacre of nearly 150 Shiites in Dujail.

After Kurdish presiding judge Rizgar Mohammed Amin read the defendants their rights and the charges against them, he asked each for their plea.

The ousted Iraqi leader replied quietly, "I am not guilty."

The tribunal has been trying to show the trial will be up to international standards.

The judges and court officials underwent extensive training in the United States and Britain in international criminal law and international practices.
