The process of making pearl ash is pretty straightforward, though might seem a bit complicated to those lacking in the chemistry education department.
It also doesn't help that there's so much bunk information out there, as I pointed out in one of my Potash videos, here it is if you need a refresher:
• Leeching Lye from Wood Ash - Potassium Car...
Refining potash is a way of dealing with the inconsistencies that come from making it. Depending on the plant species, climate, where it is grown, and what parts are burned, the concentrations of various salts can vary enormously.
Through refining, we are trying to separate the "good stuff" as much as possible, and getting a much purer batch of potassium carbonate while tossing the rest of the salts.
The system isn't perfect. Calcining and repeating this recrystalization would be required to get finer and finer grades of salts, but it's a terrific start that will give your experimental historical soaps and other products a more uniform prescription, rather than vague references to floating an egg or dissolving a feather.
