Description: Conduct of a cremation; Sandalwood is installed on the most popular incineration ghat Manikarnika Ghat (the second being Harishchandra). There, the richest families take their places in height, while the poorest will be at the edge of the river. The body is purified in the Ganges before being placed on the pyre that the eldest son (or failing that a nephew) lights with clarified butter by making seven times the turn clockwise. The next day the relatives will come to collect the ashes (and the remains when the family could not buy enough wood) and throw them into the Ganges. Only sadhus and babies, considered pure, are thrown directly into the river without being cremated.
