Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the second day's play from this first Test match between Pakistan and New Zealand. It all looked like New Zealand till Daryl Mitchell dropped Babar Azam when he was 12 in the first session yesterday. Pakistan were bleak when their top three batters- Abdullah Shafique Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq threw their wicket away within the first hour of the match. Later on rebuilding work was on with a 62-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Saud Shakeel and Babar Azam. Right at the stroke of Lunch Shakeel was taken care of by New Zealand's Test skipper Tim Southee.
If Mitchell didn't drop Babar then it would have been a different story. But let's leave ifs and buts and appreciate the way the Pakistani skipper played. He stroked one after the other beautiful cricketing shots and negated the spinners really well. He went on to score a magnificent hundred. Add to that he is still batting at 161 runs at a very good strike rate as well. Also take a moment to applaud the player who is coming back to the Test side after four years and playing his first Test match at home- Sarfaraz Ahmed. The former Pakistani skipper made his comeback memorable and supported Babar in the team's redemption after being reduced to 110/4. He was also struggling with his hamstring but was determined not to walk off the field and amassed a classy 86.
This partnership between Babar and Sarfaraz was worth 196 runs and got broken right at the fag end of the first day thanks to Mitchell who this time held onto a low catch at first slip to dismiss the wicketkeeper batter. Starting the day with confidence Babar Azam will be partnered by Agha Salman who will try to bat out the opposition with a massive first innings score. On the other hand the Kiwis with the fairly second new ball will try to exploit the moisture left in the match during the first hour of the morning session. New Zealand need some quick wickets in bundles and it will be an intriguing session coming our way as Pakistan will resume the day at 317/5...
1st Test Day 1 Overview: That’s it for the day!!! A grilling day for the Kiwis. The balance was in their favour after the first session but at the end of the day it is Pakistan who are in the driver’s seat. 93 runs have been scored off the last session from 32 overs and two wickets fell for Pakistan. Earlier in the day Pakistan won the toss and decided to bat first. However in the first session the visitors had the hosts on the back foot. Very quickly the Pakistanis were 3 for 48 in 15 overs. After this there was a 62 runs partnership that somewhat steadied the ship for the hosts. But Saud Shakeel fell as the fourth wicket for the Pakistanis when the score of the team was 110 in 29 overs.
Sarfaraz Ahmed joined hands with Babar Azam at this stage. The duo bid their time in the middle and gradually put Pakistan in a position of strength. They stitched a partnership of 196 runs and took the total past 300 runs. In the 86th over of the innings Ajaz Patel picked up wicket of Sarfaraz Ahmed. But Sarfaraz had played a solid knock of 86 runs off 153 balls by then. Babar Azam was then joined in the middle by Agha Salman (3* off 16) and the duo saw off the day for Pakistan. Babar remained unbeaten on 161 off 277 and will resume his innings tomorrow. Pakistan are stationed at 317 for 5 at the end of the first day's play.
