Robin Olds flew 107 combat missions before he found the answer. The Me-262 was untouchable in a straight fight — 870 mph, no propeller, four cannons that could destroy a B-17 in a single pass. Three standard interception methods failed. Every after-action report said the same thing: you cannot outrun a jet.
Olds read a different report. A November 1944 technical assessment buried in 8th Air Force intelligence files documented one detail nobody had weaponized: the Junkers Jumo 004 engine took 8 seconds to respond to full throttle.
Eight seconds was enough.
A flat scissors entry at 4,500 feet forced the Me-262 into an overshoot. At the six-o'clock position, 200 yards out, the Merlin engine answered in a fraction of a second. The Jumo 004 was still spooling.
April 1945: 26 Me-262s confirmed destroyed.
