What Hormones Test for Infertility?
Hormone testing is often one of the first steps in evaluating fertility concerns, but it’s important to understand its limitations. There’s no single hormone test that can diagnose infertility. Instead, several key hormones are assessed to get a clearer picture of reproductive health.
Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) are essential for ovulation and egg production. Estrogen and progesterone regulate the menstrual cycle and play critical roles in preparing the uterus for pregnancy. Additionally, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and prolactin levels are measured since these can significantly impact fertility.
However, Dr. Serin Seckin emphasizes that even with this information, hormone levels alone don’t confirm infertility. For example, an undetectable anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) level, a marker often associated with ovarian reserve, doesn’t necessarily mean someone is infertile. “There's no way to tell if somebody's infertile unless they've tried to get pregnant and they haven't been able to,” says Dr. Seckin.
A hormone panel is an excellent starting point in a fertility evaluation. It provides valuable insights into potential factors affecting fertility, but it's not definitive. Infertility is a complex diagnosis that often requires both hormonal testing and clinical observation over time.
