Why a wounded American soldier asked for just 8 bullets during the largest banzai charge of WW2 — and why the Army gave him the Medal of Honor. This World War 2 story reveals one man's impossible choice on Saipan.
July 7, 1944. Private Thomas Baker, a rifleman with the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Infantry Division, was fighting on Saipan's Tanapag Plain. Between 3,000 and 5,000 Japanese soldiers launched the largest suicide charge of the Pacific War directly at his position. Baker fought until his rifle shattered in hand-to-hand combat. Wounded and unable to walk, a fellow soldier tried to carry him to safety. That soldier was shot.
Baker made a decision that stunned everyone.
He refused further evacuation, insisting he would rather die than risk more American lives. He asked to be propped against a tree facing the enemy. And he asked for one thing: a pistol with 8 bullets remaining. His fellow soldiers had no choice but to leave him there, alone, as thousands of Japanese troops swept through the area.
What they found when they returned changed how the Army understood courage under impossible circumstances. Baker was one of three men from the 105th Infantry Regiment awarded the Medal of Honor for actions that day — alongside Lt. Col. William O'Brien and Captain Ben Salomon.
