China has claimed more than 70 percent of the 5G base stations in the world with over 400 million end users, said Xiao Yaqing, Minister of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) on Monday.

A total of 1.037 million 5G base stations had been built nationwide up to August, which covered all the prefecture-level cities across China, more than 95 percent of the county seats and 35 percent of the town centers.

"Our 5G base stations have accounted for more than 70 percent of the world in number. The end users of our 5G have exceeded 400 million, making the largest group of users in the world," said Xiao.

The MIIT will continue to expand the application scenarios in the next step by targeting the three major areas of new information consumption, real economy, and people's livelihood services, with the focus put on multiple key sectors such as industry, transportation, medical care, agriculture, and culture and tourism, while cultivating a batch of typical demonstrations of 5G integrated applications.

"We will follow the principle of appropriately going ahead of others, comprehensive promote the construction of 5G networks, accelerate the coverage in towns, so as to further extend the coverage. We will deepen the co-construction and sharing of 5G, and advance cross-network roaming. We will accelerate the 5G coverage in key areas of transportation hubs and commercial centers, especially in densely populated universities, hospitals and other special places, and ultimately improve the 5G service experience. Through 5G virtual private networks, hybrid virtual private networks and other methods, we will promote the construction and application of 5G in key industries," said Zhao Zhiguo, spokesman of the MIIT.

工信部下一步将针对新信息消费、实体经济、民生服务三大领域，继续拓展应用场景，重点围绕工业、交通、医疗、农业、文化旅游等多个重点领域，培育一批5G综合应用典型示范。

“我们将按照适度领先的原则，全面推进5G网络建设，加快城镇覆盖，进一步扩大覆盖。深化5G共建共享，推进跨网漫游。加快交通枢纽和商业中心重点区域5G覆盖，特别是人口密集的高校、医院等特殊场所，最终提升5G服务体验。通过5G虚拟专网、混合虚拟专网等方式，推动5G在重点行业的建设和应用。”工信部新闻发言人赵志国说。
