Duncan Pittaway's 1893 Salvesen steamer was built by Henry Salvesen to use on his estate in Scotland. After he died it changed hands only a couple of times, but was not used again for decades until it was put back on the road by John Brydon. It came into Duncan's custody in 2018, who did a torough mechanical restoration and for example installed the external flywheel again. With Duncan as the usual stoker, all his other family members have taken the steering wheel, eg on the London to Brighton veteran car run. There is even evidence that Rowan Atkinson drove it !!
The footage for this movie was made at the amazing Festival of Slowth in France in 2023, organised by the Vintage Revival Montlhéry team. Masterly driven all weekend there by Charlie, its passengers varied as the days passed :-).
The moving footage sound is normally disturbed by the noise of the film motorbike, but at other moments you can witness the silent mode in which this coal-powered car moves. Brilliant !
I could not resist a cameo of Stefan Marjoram, who also provided the people's portraits at the end. Thanks Stefan !!
Many thanks too of course to Vincent and the team for the excellent weekend ! A shout-out to these crazy people who keep all this amazing machinery on the road: you are all wonderful !
