Surathkal Beach in Mangalore is counted amongst the most frequented beaches in the state of Karnataka. Located in the peaceful suburbs of Surathkal, this beach is simply gorgeous and somehow, still untouched with the touristy charms. The place basically remains crowded with college kids from the institutes nearby and serves as a picnic spot for the locals. Though there’s not much to do here, you can still bring a chair, sit back and enjoy sunset views which are absolutely breathtaking. Another thing about this beach is the lighthouse which sits on a rocky hillock. You can visit this lighthouse between 4 PM and 5 PM in the evening to enjoy spectacular views of the countryside and the sea.
If you are a morning person, visit here at the time of dawn and see fishermen from the nearby villages embarking on a sea journey on their fishing boats. The scene looks amazing and is an experience in itself! There’s also an ancient Sadashiva Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, on a hillock. This conch-shaped temple is surrounded by four ponds the water of which is considered utterly sacred. Moreover, you can take in some awesome views of the sea from this temple near Surathkal Beach.
Some of the other prominent places to visit in and around Surathkal include Astha Math, Sacred Heart Church (5 km from here), Sasihitulu village (also 5 km away), the ancient town of Moodbidri (known for Jain temples from the 15th century), and Murudeshwar (known for its ancient Shiva Temple). Then there are pilgrim places such as Udupi, Kollur, and Kukke Subramanya and one can plan a visit to these sacred sites also which are located close to Mangalore.
