o Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2020
Finalist, Calum McIlroy is a guitarist, mandolinist and singer from Elrick
in Aberdeenshire. A proponent of the flat picking style of guitar and
mandolin playing, a strong sense of melody is at the heart of his music.
His
catalogue features self-composed material, as well as tunes and
songs from a variety of sources , all presented with detail and
intricacy.
A student at the
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he has been taught
by top musicians such as Kevin MacKenzie , Ali Hutton and Fiona
Hunter.
He fronts his own trio featuring
Megan MacDonald (Eabhal, HEISK ) on
accordion , and Ruairidh Gollan on fiddle. Together with Anna Garvin
on keyboard they are currently working towards their first recording.
Megan is an accordionist from Lairg in Sutherland. Her
diverse repertoire from Scottish and world traditions,
combined with sensitive and assured playing has seen her
much in demand as a tutor, band member and session
musician. Megan performs with ensembles such as Eabhal,
HEISK, Josie Duncan and the Dusk, and The Calum McIlroy
Trio.
ABOUT TOGETHER AT HOME
Live Music Now Scotland will continue to bring the joy of music into people's lives, even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our Together at Home series is a programme of brand new concerts, recorded especially for sharing with our longstanding audiences, whether those in care homes, pre-school children or people at home in every one of Scotland’s 32 local authorities - and now beyond! We hope you enjoy.
ABOUT LIVE MUSIC NOW SCOTLAND
Live Music Now Scotland pays professional musicians fair rates to work in the heart of our communities. The charity selects exceptional musicians at the start of their careers, with the ability to communicate with a huge range of audiences. LMNS enhances their skills through training and organises performances for audiences that wouldn’t often get the chance to enjoy live music.
Live Music Now is a music outreach charity, which operates throughout the UK and internationally. Violinist Yehudi Menuhin founded Live Music Now 43 years ago, after seeing first-hand the uplifting and transformative effect that music can have on people, no matter how difficult their circumstances.
