In this Geo Fact Explorer short, we zoom into Centralia, a near-abandoned mining town in Pennsylvania, USA, built right on top of massive coal seams. A simple trash fire in 1962 accidentally spread into an underground coal mine and turned into a coal seam fire that still burns beneath the ground today.

Roads cracked open, toxic gases leaked out and houses began to sink, until the US government finally relocated almost all of Centralia’s residents. On the map it looks like any other small town, but up close it’s a ghost town slowly collapsing above a hidden inferno.
